Purposes of establishment-

We are a new consortium established to cultivate EGAP skills.

The development of EGAP (English for General Academic Purposes) skills is essential for Japanese students, mainly in higher education, to be able to study at the same competitive level as their global peers. At the same time, EGAP competence opens up great future possibilities for the young people who will build our country's prosperity. In order to help students acquire EGAP skills, we believe it is necessary to develop and disseminate new curricula and learning materials that utilise the TOEFL® test, a global standard also widely recognised in Japan, and the world-class assessment standards and methods provided by ETS, its developer and operator. We have decided to establish the EGAP Japan Consortium (EJC) as a platform for collaboration between ETS Japan and Japanese EGAP teachers and educational institutions that agree with this philosophy.

We aim to develop human resources who measure up to global standards.

The consortium is based on the learning ecosystem concept proposed by ETS: 'Teaching - Learning - Assessment - Teacher Training (FD) – Teaching”. The consortium aims to achieve the following two objectives by sharing, verifying and integrating EGAP knowledge and learning methods into education using the TOEFL® test with volunteer educators from a variety of educational institutions.

  • (1) Collaborative development and utilisation of curricula and teaching materials for acquiring the EGAP skills necessary for the first half of higher education (first half of bachelor's courses) to the second half of higher education (second half of bachelor's courses, attainment of advanced degrees, entry into overseas graduate schools, etc.)
  • (2) Broad use of the curricula, teaching materials and learning ecosystems developed by the Consortium in high school education, high school-university cooperation, government projects (national and municipal support projects, etc.) and student study abroad programs.
